Z-axis came into existence for a multimedia performance event in 1997. When the musicians felt the chemistry was right, they decided to pursue the adventure as a band in their own right. Disillusioned by the whole music scene, keyboardist Allen Welty-green called it quits in the mid-'80s and turned to performance art. He co-founded the artistic cooperative Gnosis with choreographer L.E. Udaykee in Atlanta, GA. The co-op put together the event Reality Check for which Welty-green wrote the music. He recruited old schoolmate Phillip Hart (drums), bassist Jeff Tyson, and guitarist Mark Baker to record the soundtrack: Z-axis was born. After the premiere of Reality Check in 1999, the musicians decided to keep the project alive and released the CD Music From Reality Check on Welty-green's own Gnosis Productions label. Their music falls somewhere between new age instrumental and ethnic fusion prog. ~ François Couture, All Music Guide
