But Why....?
Its so hard to imagine and every parents worst nightmare. The late night phone call from Police telling you that your child has been involved in a car crash and they are on the way to the hospital. The Panic! Heart pounding fear and then of course the questions....Is he okay? What happened? Who was driving? Was it his fault?
"Your Son was hit by a Drunk Driver" Oh my god! "He was tee boned at an intersection by a speeding, red light running drunk". " His car flipped over and caught on fire...he's been badly burned". "Oh and by the way--the drunk driver was an off duty police officer"! Stunned silence.
18 year old Robert Wasyliw suffered a broken collarbone and burned back that will require skin grafts. I've had skin grafts. Its very painful and takes a long time to heal. Your scarred for life and have to be very careful in the sun and with infections. Robert is Alive. Thank God!
The drunk driver is Constable Douglas Kurtis Brown -- suspended--with pay. "But Why?" asked one outraged phone caller this morning. Edmonton police service like most in North America have very strict labour codes designed to protect them in situations where they are charged with crimes. After all they are doing extremely dangerous work, dealing with all kinds of shady characters who would love to cause the officers suffering.
So until his case gets tried he's innocent but we all know he's not! I just hope the officer doesn't try to wriggle out of this with some fancy lawyer or special circumstances. "Man Up" as they say...admit your guilt and confess.
Our thoughts are with the Wasyliw family!
